ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION

Our main goal at NativeScapes is to provide ecological integrity to the landscapes which surround us all. Therefore our primary service is ecological restoration and maintenance of those areas restored. NativeScapes has worked on clearing acres of invasive plant populations for areas in Cheltenham Township, at Pennypack Trust in Huntingdon Valley, and for residents throughout the Philadelphia region.

FEATURED PROJECTS

Stormwater Diversion

This project added garden space for the client and acts as a berm of sorts diverting stormwater around the patio and house. The clients indicated they had not had any water in their basement after the installation of this design, and requested an additional rain garden area be designed.

FEATURED PROJECTS

Swale Stabilization

This swale stabilization project at Pennypack Trust used coir logs and matting along with native shrubs and trees to help stabilize the sides of the naturally occurring stormwater conveyance. Rain from the meadows upslope travel trough the woodlands to the Pennypack Creek. Over the years the rain had eroded the swale putting lots of sediment in the creek. Various checks were installed including log sills, large rocks and pooling areas to capture sediment and rebuild the bed of the swale and increase pressure on the sides. This rebuilds structure and controls erosion.

FEATURED PROJECTS

Jenkintown Creek Restoration

The Jenkintown Creek Restoration Project, organized by Tookany-Tacony Frankford Watershed Partnership included multiple partners and sites. NativeScapes was contracted to construct additional area for a vernal pool and restore/stabilize approximately 100 feet of stream bank at McKinley Elem. School in Elkins Park, PA. NativeScapes is also contracted to maintain various riparian plantings for the project.

FEATURED PROJECTS

Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust Trail Design

These conceptual designs explore path options for the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust's trails located at the Visitor's Center and greenhouses. NativeScapes has helped to address the grading and layout of the trail and it's planting plan. NativeScapes also does the installation of projects like this.

FEATURED PROJECTS

Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust Trail at the Beaver Pond

These concepts and analysis of a main trail in PERT identify a flooding problem over the trail caused by beaver damming a pond. The designs show two ways of dealing with the water on the trail either by diverting it off the trail, or by embracing it and creating a more narrow trail with riparian plantings in the flooded area.

FEATURED PROJECTS

Silo Hill Basin Retrofit - Emmitsburg, Maryland

NativeScapes was asked to consult and design this project at a community in Maryland. The basin was inundated with sediment from years of stormwater coming from the surrounding roads. A small spring feeds the basin continually with a small volume of flowing water. The site was a monoculture of cattail and had only a handful of native tree species growing. NativeScapes redesigned the grading to allow for two basins to be tiered, allowing one to fill first then the lower basin to fill during heavier storms. A planting plan using native plants appropriate for the region and ecotype was developed. The project involved direct communication with contractors, the township and the surrounding community.
